The strategic impact of URANUS is the personalization of air interfaces based on optimized transceiver technologies to operate in different environments with an optimization of costs for implementation, operation (including license fees) and introduction of new standards. Some of the resulting consequences are listed below:

  • From a user perspective, the underlying open wireless platforms are necessary in order to fully exploit the flexibility of the reconfigurable air interfaces with respect to link level parameters, coverage, security, service availability and cost efficiency.
  • Semiconductor providers will be able to develop a flexible platform for a broad range of wireless applications.
  • Terminal and equipment manufacturers can benefit from the platform-oriented design resulting in shorter design cycles, longer platform life, reduced number of required patents and broader applications to be offered to new customer groups.
  • Operators and system providers can exploit the rapid deployment of new services and technology and optimize their systems in terms of resources and spectrum usage.
